There is a wide range of stuff that you can get and use in various books, in ways that mostly make sense, and the skills you can get are diverse and original, if not quite balanced. A constant theme of these books is that you start out on some routine expedition, and get caught up in a conspiracy to overthrow the kingdom that you have to stop, the faceless characters around you get killed, you get beaten up, confront an all powerful monster or villain and destroy it, obtain another skill and some more items to use in the next book and move on.
You are Lone Wolf, the last suviving Kai. You must survive the journey to your nation's captial to warn the king that the evil forces are attacking and have killed all of the Kai except you. The Kai are a group of supreme warriors who traditionally lead your nation's military during war.
This series is the primary motivator and singular reason I got into game design. Take that how you will.
This book starts as a mission to discover what has happened to the missing gold shipments that were supposed to be on the way to your homeland of Sommerlund. However, there is much more going on in this adventure that will test your Kai skills.
